Determined from a young age to become a film director, Jacques Demy (5 June 1931 – 27 October 1990) drew on his love for Hollywood musicals and fairytales to create a unique and inspired body of work unlike anything else in cinema history. His bittersweet, yet uplifting movies, frequently set in the kind of seaside towns were he grew up, reflect his romantic, yet somewhat disillusioned view of human relationships.
